Via a magnificent route we drive behind each other from Arvidsjaur and through: Kiruna, Tromsø, Alta, Honningsvag, Noordkaap and Munio finally back to Arvidsjaur.
Kiruna (Sweden):
You will not find a more curious city than Kiruna in all of Sweden. Scattered between the crooked dwarf birches on the mountain plateau, surrendered to the savage elements and entirely dependent on the mining industry, Kiruna is now forced to move the entire city because of the growing danger of collapse due to the ever further erosion of the mines under the city.
That will be an unparalleled spectacle, because how do you actually move the 1963 city hall of 50 by 50 meters, which has the status of monument and therefore should not be demolished. Or the fantastic wooden church from 1912 that has recently been declared the most beautiful wooden church in Sweden.
And then there is the largest ice hotel in Scandinavia that is recommended by many tour operators and famous personalities. Of course we visit this gigantic building.
Tromsø (Norway):
This city in the Polar region not only has a rich culture and history, it is also one of the best places to see the Northern Lights.
Tromsø is located approximately 350 kilometers above the Arctic Circle, and is the largest city in the north of Norway. The city is a popular destination for those who want to see the Northern Lights, the best season for this is from September to the end of March. However, it should be noted that the probability of seeing the northern lights depends on cloudiness and solar activity, and that it is therefore difficult to predict this too far in advance.
The Tromsø region has been inhabited for many thousands of years. However, the city itself is only 200 years old. Shortly after the founding of the town of Tromsø it became a flourishing center of the fur trade in the Arctic, and around 1900 the city was the starting point for many expeditions to the then still largely unknown high north and the North Pole itself. This has given Tromsø the nickname “Gateway to the North Pole”.
Alta (Norway):
If we have not seen the Northern Lights in Tromsø yet, we still have a very good chance in Alta. Alta has been nicknamed “Nordlysbyen Alta” or “Noorderlichtstad Alta” because of the fact that the chance that you can observe Aurora Borealis – the Northern Lights – is relatively large. This is due to the fact that there is generally less cloud over the area around Alta than over other places in Norway.
Remarkable: Just south of Alta, there is an unusual forest for this place. It consists of deciduous trees; Because of the warm Gulf Stream and the shelter by the mountains against the cold east / south wind, deciduous trees can reach full growth here, while the deciduous tree border lies many kilometers to the south.
North Cape / Honingsvag (Norway):
The North Cape is seen as the northernmost tip of Europe. From the famous North Cape plateau you have a fantastic view and here is also the North Cape monument, a popular photo location. Standing at the edge of the cliff you really feel that you are at the end of the world. Between this place and the North Pole there is only the Svalbard Archipelago (Spitsbergen).
For tourists, the most important question is: do I go in winter or in summer? This choice is difficult because the experience is quite different. In addition, the decor also changes considerably, making it actually two types of holidays.
The winter is especially challenging, with relatively short days and a temperature that falls below zero as standard. The trip to the North Cape can then only take place with a snowplow in front. But it does provide an adventurous experience that belongs to this inhospitable place in northern Europe.
Munio (Finland):
Through the fairytale Finland and an overnight stay in the neighborhood of Munio we finally return to Arvidsjaur. In addition to several fantastic impressions, more than 2,300 kilometers more are now on the kilometer counter. Are you at least 23 years old, adventurous and you have a wide driving experience, then go with us to the fantastic high north of Europe.
Thanks to the organization of the ScanCoveryTrial, our instructors have an excellent experience. They know the way everywhere and introduce you to all the beauty that northern Scandinavia can offer you. A great experience that you will remember for a long time.
ALL-INCLUSIVE Included: flight, hotel accommodation, breakfast, evening dinner, snowmobile tour, husky tour, visit ice hotel and use instruction cars excluding fuel during the whole period.
